When my youngest son was born, Fourteen and a half years ago, I felt like a very old man. After a lifetime of high pressure jobs, bad diet and heavy smoking, I was severely overweight and I could hardly breathe. I had high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and was a borderline diabetic. I knew unless I changed I would not live long enough to see my baby boy grow up. I quit smoking and joined the local Gym. After three months I was making zero progress on my own. One day while struggling through my routine I was given a hand from a young man who introduced himself as Marty Williams. I knew that he was the senior trainer and was very much in demand as a coach. I soon realised why. I learned more about diet and exercise in the ten minutes I spent with Marty than I had in all my time at the gym. Seizing the moment I asked if Marty if he could train me. To tell you the truth I still think he accepted because he loves a challenge. Instinctively I sensed this was going to be a turning point in my life, little did I know just how significant it would be.

As motivator and educator Marty is second to none. He individualised my program to suit me. Within weeks I could breathe, my blood pressure dropped and all my ‘old man’ symptoms disappeared. Within the year I had dropped 22kg in fat and significantly increased muscle mass. I used to do push-ups with my son sitting on my back. For the first time in my life I was fit and healthy and felt unstoppable. Fast forward a year, I continued my training, kept the weight off and my fitness level remained high. Out of nowhere I suffered a bout of illness. I was diagnosed with the rare and incurable muscle degenerating autoimmune disease, Dermatomyositis. I listened to the statistics. I contemplated a future where I would be in a wheelchair in a couple of years, not strong enough to feed myself. I was devastated. A very loose translation of Marty’s reaction was ‘no way’. He researched my illness and designed a plan that would counteract the damaging effects and away we went. That was twelve years ago.

I continue to defy the odds. I have never come close to a wheel chair and have passed all of my muscle strength tests. Marty continues to work with me through every set back, through the multitude of medication, motivating me, redesigning programs, never letting me give up. Not because he has to, not for the money but because he is 100% committed to helping everyone to be the best they can be. In all our time together I have seen Marty’s expertise develop exponentially. Marty along with the equally talented Kelly and the highly trained team at Shredded offer everyone the opportunity of that individual training experience, nutritional advice and much more. Be the best you can be, you never know the significance of what that might mean.

“When I first started at Shredded Strength Institute I was a complete novice..I had never really trained so I didn’t realize the enormous potential I had. I didn’t realize I was about to fall in love and change my life forever. When Shredded say that its ‘a lifestyle change’ it really is…I have learned how to train, how to eat for life, how to really achieve.. I have since gained kilos of lean mass and shed body fat, I train almost every day, I play sport – I’m a totally different person. “I am a man in his 40’s who has been training for quite some years; most of those with bad training techniques leading to problems with posture and thoracic area. No doubt, a man in his 40’s is not going to have the same body as someone in their 20’s and even 30’s; however, I was determined to get to the best I could possibly be.

I had seen both Kelly and Marty train other clients, and obviously compared them to other trainers in the gym. What impressed me was their level of focus and their methodology; something that appeared to be lacking in the other trainers. I engaged Marty to take me through a weight training regimen to better my overall shape, form and posture, and Kelly to work on my core strength and abdominal muscles to further enhance the core strength, and of course, to get me back into jeans that were below a 32. I was, at that time, a 34 inch waist.

I trained with them for well over a year, and the results have spoken for themselves. My posture has improved tenfold, my back problems have been completely eliminated and aesthetically, I think I can match most of the twenty-something year-olds at the gym, which in turn, has boosted my overall confidence.

They have taught me that it is not necessarily about the size of the weights lifted, or the number of crunches endured; rather, about the technique employed to ensure that the muscles are utilised to their full potential. Clearly, heavy lifting previously only added to my injuries and didn’t get me too far aesthetically; I look better now in my 40’s than I did when I was 30 and I am not necessarlity lifting heavier weights.

I also learned through Marty and Kelly’s methodologies about proper diet and nutrition which are obviously as important as the training itself.

I first heard about Shredded in January 2009 as my old gym shut down. I started participating in the group classes that Kelly and Marty offered and really liked their style of teaching.

At the time, I did four spin classes and one pump class during week days and play competitive tennis once or twice at week ends. I was a size 10, fit and healthy person. I had 26% body fat at that time. I wasn’t 100% happy about my look and body fat percentage even though I stayed active and careful about what I ate and drank.

A few months later, I talked to Kelly briefly about my interest in personal training with her and we started after a couple of e-mails. I have been training one on one once a week and three other days on my own with the program that Kelly designed for me.

Kelly has demonstrated her professionalism from the very beginning. She has high level of knowledge in weights and cardio training, nutrients, and supplements. She is the most inspiring, strong minded and experienced personal trainer I have ever met.

I am now size 8, fitter, stronger, and most importantly (and the goal of my life) leaner at 11.5% body fat today!

I cannot do without Kelly’s guidance and program. All I have to do is to follow her instructions precisely about the program, diet, and supplements. (Oh and I don’t cheat!) The results have been amazing!!

I cannot thank Kelly enough for what she has given for my life because my dad passed away at age of 58, suffered from very high blood pressure and mum at age of 63, suffered from type-2 diabetes.  I have bad genes but I broke the cycle for my children I think, I am now the healthiest I have ever been and look and feel better than I ever imagined was possible.

I started training with Marty in 2007 after a prolonged absence from serious exercise. I had always kept myself reasonably fit and had been a moderate competitor until a major injury and subsequent reconstructive shoulder surgery stopped all that. It had been about 3 years post surgery when I was recommended to Marty. My motivation was primarily to build strength in my shoulder to overcome residual aches and pains, but more importantly to try and regain fitness and maintain a commitment to regular exercise without recurring setbacks. In those 3 years it just seemed I had never fully rehabilitated; every time I tried to get back into exercise, I would injure something else. Probably because I overdid it and didn’t transition back into exercise progressively.

That’s where Marty came in, and I think I said to him something like “Your job is to make sure I don’t overdo it and hurt myself!” Now he hurts me all the time!

I think that where Marty is different from the majority of trainers is that his extensive knowledge and experience enables him to work safely and effectively with injured clients; achieving both rehabilitation results at the same time as improving overall strength and fitness. When people say they can’t train because they are injured; that’s only because they don’t have the right trainer!

I achieved my original objectives with Marty reasonably quickly and over the years we have worked together on specific things- be it preparation for skiing or trekking to Everest Base Camp. And Marty is very good at tailoring your training to your specific objectives and to your potential. He doesn’t let you off lightly. And the reasons I still train with Marty are that I enjoy it and it’s never the same twice. He keeps it interesting and ensures that I continue to be challenged and hence continue to improve my fitness.

For me one of the huge benefits I have realized is my improvement in functional strength over the past couple of years. On returning to activities like windsurfing, skiing and cycling have been amazed at how my strength in the gym translates to strength and endurance in the field.

And of course it’s nice when you meet windsurfing friends on the beach in your bathers that you haven’t seen for a while and they say “Wow, how fit do you look…and you even have some abs!” That’s a good feeling.
